Losing IT

What's the single most effective method for retaining talent?

When the going gets tough, the tough get their CVs out. It happens quite regularly on most pressured transformations. What’s the one best remedy for re-motivating and retaining disgruntled team members?

Dead simple. Listen to them.

As Transformation Lead, one of your key responsibilities is to make time for people - and make enough time to listen to them well and empathetically. That’s everything from making time to hear about their weekend; to listening to their career aspirations; to letting them sound-off when it’s not going well.

Listen in order to understand where the person is coming from. Don’t assume you just need to nod and agree while they get it off their chest. Take whatever action you can to bring them back alongside. Often, showing you really do understand how tough they are having it can be enough. If people are paid positive attention – both when they do and don’t need it - you will stand a far better chance of retaining talent. In return, they will give you early-warning signals that they need attention, so you can address dissatisfaction before the place becomes Leaving Party Central.
